From January 15 to 17, 2025, the 2nd Rockburst Workshop was successfully held at the University of Adelaide, Australia. The event was organized by the ISRM Commission on Rockburst and hosted by the University of Adelaide. Academician Manchao He, Chair of the ISRM Commission on Rockburst and President of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME), led a delegation to Australia to attend the workshop and delivered a keynote speech titled "Rockburst Experiment."
As the second workshop in the ISRM Rockburst Commission's thematic series, this event focused on "Experimental and Computational Rockburst Analysis," The workshop was chaired by Associate Professor Murat Karakus from the University of Adelaide, who opened the session with a keynote presentation titled "Rockburst Modelling Using Damage Mechanics Principles." This was followed by keynote presentations from:
Professor Ismet Canbulat (University of New South Wales), who presented "Analytical Model of Energies within Rock Mass."
Professor Fidelis Suorineni (Nazarbayev University), who discussed "Laboratory-Based Discrete Physical Modelling with Machine Learning for the Advancement of Seismic Event Source Location Accuracy."
Associate Professor Giang Nguyen (University of Adelaide), who delivered a talk on "Energy Principles and the Energy-Based Rockburst Criterion."
Associate Professor Chengguo Zhang (University of New South Wales), who presented "Microstructure Influences on Macroscale Behaviour through Numerical Modelling."
The workshop concluded with the announcement that the 3rd Rockburst Workshop will be held in 2026, focusing on "Rockburst Monitoring and Early Warning," with Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan as the host institution.
The Rockburst Workshop series was jointly initiated by Academician Manchao He, Professor Ismet Canbulat, Associate Professor Murat Karakus, and Professor Fidelis Suorineni, under the ISRM Commission on Rockburst. Each workshop focuses on a specific aspect of rockburst, fostering thorough discussions and generating academic publications, thereby actively promoting scientific and technological advancements in the field.
