China Rock 2022 Keynote|Academician Manchao He: Mission of Rock Mechanics ---From Material Revolution to Engineering Revolution

Lecturer: Academician Manchao He Expert in rock mechanics of mining engineering, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), academician of the Mining Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, academician of the Argentine National Academy of Engineering, professor of China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), acting as part-time President of the CSRME, as Vice President of International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction (ICGdR), etc. Winner of the National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Talent Award (2016), the National Innovation Award (2017), and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award (2014). Academician Manchao He is mainly engaged in theoretical and technical research on the control of large deformation of mine rock. He proposed the theoretical system of "slow deformation" and "sudden deformation" for analysis of large deformation geodisasters, developed several experimental systems for investigating large deformation geodisaster mechanisms, and created the Deep Rock Mechanics Laboratory. In addition, Academician Manchao He proposed the concept of constant resistance and large deformation anchor bolts (cable) with NPR (negative Poisson's ratio) effect, and finalized with experiments the series products of constant resistance and large deformation anchor bolts (cable) with NPR effect, which were successfully applied to engineering practice and achieved huge economic and social benefits. He has won the 1 second prize in National Technological Invention Award, 3 second prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 China Patent Gold Award, and 1 ISRM Technology Invention Award.

Report Summary
Energy engineering, transportation engineering, water conservancy project, disaster engineering and national defense construction, and so on are national strategies of China. In these projects, the problem of large deformation damage has been frequently encountered. The essence of the damage to the engineering body is that the steel material breaks because the small deformation of the steel material cannot bear the large deformation. The new material NPR with independent intellectual property rights is a new type of metamaterial, which eliminates necking, and has the characteristics of high strength and toughness, impact resistance, non-magnetism, tolerance to large deformation, and so on. With the support of new materials NPR, a series of technologies have been invented, such as automatically formed roadway using mine pressure, Newton's force monitoring system for landslide disasters, etc. We have achieved revolutionary progress in the fields of energy engineering, transportation engineering, water conservancy project, disaster engineering, and national defense construction with these new technology systems.
