China Rock 2022- The 19th China Rock Mechanics and Engineering Annual Academic Conference was successfully held in Beijing

On November 3-6, 2022, China Rock 2022- The 19th China Rock Mechanics and Engineering Annual Academic Conference was successfully held in Beijing, China. The conference was co-sponsored by the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME) and the International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction (ICGdR), with the theme of "Energy Prospects and Rock Mechanics".
On the morning of November 4, 2022, the opening ceremony of the conference was launched. Academician Manchao He, president of the CSRME, delivered the opening speech. He emphasized that under the guidance of the China Association for Science and Technology, China Rock, as a special conference on rock mechanics and engineering, it is designed to build a high-level platform for discussion, communication and cooperation among rock mechanics practitioners. He sincerely hoped that all participating experts will focus on the bottleneck problems of rock mechanics, make full use of the platform of the CSRME and the platform of China Rock to advance the science and technology related to rock mechanics and rock engineering. Professor Fawu Wang, the ICGdR president, delivered a speech and expressed warm congratulations on the successful opening of the conference. He briefly introduced the operation of the ICGdR and the cooperation with the CSRME over the years. He believed that the conference will be an academic feast with rich content with active participation of both domestic and international experts. Dr. Gang Han, the president of the American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA), expressed his congratulations on the convening of this academic event as scheduled. He said that rock mechanics and rock engineering are facing great opportunities and challenges. In the development of infrastructure and the exploitation and utilization of new energy, rock mechanics has been and will continue to be an active participant and facilitator. He briefly introduced the highlighted work of ARMA, looked forward to future cooperation with the CSRME, and wished the conference a complete success.
The conference has 1 main venue, 29 sub-venues, and 339 satellite venues, with 7356 online participants. The conference was broadcasted on the website of the conference, and also on platforms such as China Association for Science and Technology and Beijing Association for Science and Technology. The total number of viewers reached 6.9 million. There are 22 keynotes at the main venue, 593 academic reports at the sub-venues, 12 technical training sessions, and a 60,000 m2 365-day "never-ending" online VR industry exhibition. The specially invited experts from CSRME, ICGdR, and ARMA made excellent keynote lectures at the conference. International experts from 14 countries including the US, the UK, Japan, Canada, France, Italy, Portugal, Australia, Spain, Switzerland, Greece, Indonesia, Nepal, and Slovenia attended the conference. The conference topics covered 29 session topics, and the most popular sessions were: soft rock engineering and deep hazard control, rock engineering survey, deep underground engineering, key science and technology for high-level radioactive waste disposal, landslides and engineering slopes and etc. A total of 382 full-text manuscripts were received at the conference, and 187 were accepted (56 of which were accepted by journals and 131 by conference proceedings). During the conference, 65 exhibitors were organized to display their scientific and technological innovations online in VR, which has been visited by more than 230,000 people. There were also 12 technical training courses organized on themes related to 110/N00 mining method, finite element method, discrete element method, with 2,180 trainees. The 7th Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering was also held at the same time, where ten scientific and technological innovations competed on the same stage, and the number of online viewers reached 143,700 at the finals.
